Will my pants hold out until pay day?

Gosh I feel poor.

It's always the same after the Christmas blow out and New Year sales - however much money I have sneaked aside. And around this time it seems an eternity until pay day.

This, I believe, is why so many give up alcohol in January. It's nothing to do with weight or health - they haven't got any dosh.

Anyway, the savings took another bashing. But at least - vainly trying to follow Gordon Brown's golden rules - it is the capital account which has been hit rather than current spending.

Some of you may recall the late summer flood which trashed the kitchen. Down to aging stopcocks under the floor I never knew existed.

By the time we had called in the insurance, waited for an assessor, got estimates for repairs and obtained a start date from the contractors - everyone it seems is trying to tart up their kitchen before Christmas to impress relatives - we only just managed to sort it out before the festive season.

New flooring and a new cooker. It was in just a week beforehand, which did not allow any time for anything to go wrong - thankfully it didn't. And the turkey was great. But not before visions of decanting to the nearest hotel at no doubt great expense. I know who would have been the "turkey" if that had happened. But it was all cost.

OK, I got some back on the insurance, but you never get it all. Not the emergency plumber - £250 - only the damage. And there was an excess, around £70, so that was a nightmare.

Then my son's bed collapsed. Well, it was a cheap affair and the mattress was rubbish - you get what you pay for.

Naturally, I finished it off. "I don't see what's wrong with it." Sits down and the whole thing disintegrates.

So this time it had to be a decent bed and mattress - £350, please sir. I was taking no chances with my abysmal DIY and paid an extra £10 for them to fit it.

Still hopefully both the kitchen and the bed are sorted.

The current side of the account has not been helped by a new suit. About time I hear some of the wags remark, but don't think you are going to see it any time yet. Oh, no.

It's for when the current one caves - I run my suits until you can see your face in the backside and there are tramps hanging around asking if I want the jacket.

The new one is a rather fetching light grey with subdued stripe. Half wool, half manmade, £99 from Slater's in Cannon Street in Birmingham. Doesn't do sales but nevertheless the best menswear store in the city for quality and price.

Father Christmas bought me lots of socks so we're all right there. And Marks & Spencer remains the only place for underpants. Can I just hang on until January 25? I'm counting the days.

It's your round mate.
