Overheard: Made in the shade

Birmingham's best new band, Shady Bard, are currently all over the giant MTV channel but don't expect to see their name writ large.

The pop video outlet is currently running a series of ads to promote the perils of global warming and the best ad of the six has a soundtrack of Treeology, the stand-out track on Shady Bard's debut album. Made by London ad agency Ogilvy & Mather and directed by Ubik, it can be seen at youtube or at http://therocketsurgery.blogspot.com

We're enjoying a new website, www.1Off.com, a sort of guide to Britain's cities, driven by celebrities. The fragrant Jamelia has been roped in to show us the best bits of Brum and, frankly J, it's a bit of a disappointment. We find out that the soul singer does all her food shopping at Selfridges, eats at Bank and gets her kicks at the Thinktank museum. She likes to shop at Bullring best because it "used to be a market but it's been completely refurbished and you can't really call it a market any more because it's so posh!". The footballer's wife currently lives in Kent.

Birmingham's musical bedrock has always been heavy metal. It's what we do. From Sabbath to Napalm Death, there's always been a dandruff cloud floating over the city.
With that in mind, it's time to get out your diaries if you're an academic headbanger and make time for the first symposium on the genre which is taking place at the New Art Gallery in Walsall.
It happens on the very metal Friday the 13th in July and speakers include Jim Simpson, Birmingham's legendary impresario and Sabbath's first manager. Also on the bill are Edwin Pouncey, music writer and Savage Pencil cartoonist, and Napalm Death guitarist and inventor of "grindcore" Nick Bullen. All the details can be found here

Right you are. All issues now addressed.

Hopefully.

My gods, will you people please learn how to link? There's a button above the box where you write this stuff - a little chain, next to the U. Please use it!

And 10ff.com doesn't seem to exist.

Other than that, keep up the good work.
